Collection: Sky Needle: South Brisbane
The Skyneedle in South Brisbane is one of Brisbane’s most distinctive landmarks, originally constructed as a central feature of World Expo 88, which was held along the Brisbane River at South Bank. Designed as a striking, futuristic tower, the Skyneedle stood approximately 88 metres tall and symbolised innovation and progress during the international exposition. After Expo 88 concluded, the structure was nearly dismantled; however, it was saved and later relocated a short distance to its current site in South Brisbane, where it continues to overlook the redeveloped South Bank Parklands. Over time, the Skyneedle has become an enduring visual icon of Brisbane’s transformation from an industrial riverfront into a vibrant cultural and recreational precinct, representing both the legacy of Expo 88 and the city’s modern identity.
