HISTORY OF WINDERMERE

Windermere, at 14 Sutherland Avenue, Ascot, is one of Brisbane’s notable surviving late nineteenth-century residences. Built in 1886 for prominent solicitor, pastoralist and politician John George Appel and his wife, Ruth Sutherland, the house was constructed on land originally acquired by Ruth’s father, pastoralist James Sutherland. Designed by the prominent Brisbane architect Richard Gailey, Windermere is a substantial single-storey timber residence with broad verandahs, corrugated-iron roofs and distinctive symmetrical bay windows, reflecting the grand villas erected for Brisbane’s prosperous families during the 1880s boom. Appel later moved to Nerang, and the house was subsequently occupied by a succession of prominent Brisbane families. In 1923 it was purchased by George Kermode Jeffrey, who made alterations including remodelling the eastern verandah and removing the original kitchen and servants’ quarters. From 1928 to 1967, Windermere was the home of distinguished physician Dr Ellis Murphy, later knighted for his contribution to medicine. Although altered and extended over time—including a 1930s rear addition—the principal nineteenth-century house remains substantially intact. Windermere was entered in the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992, recognised for its architectural character, association with important Queensland figures and its contribution to the historic townscape of Ascot.
