Collection: Salisbury Collection
Salisbury, a southern suburb of Brisbane, has a history that reflects its transition from rural farmland to an industrial and residential community. Originally known as Rocklea East, the area was largely used for farming and grazing in the late 19th century, with development encouraged by the opening of the South Coast railway line in 1885, which included Salisbury railway station. 1&2 The suburb was named after a property owned by early Brisbane figure William Coote, likely referencing Salisbury in England. 2 Early subdivision of land in the early 20th century, along with the establishment of local institutions such as a post office (1889) and a state school (1920), supported gradual population growth. 1&2 A major turning point occurred during World War II when the Rocklea Munitions Works were established in 1941, transforming Salisbury into an important centre for wartime manufacturing and industry. 3 After the war, the presence of transport infrastructure and industrial facilities encouraged suburban expansion, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s, leading to the development of housing, schools, and commercial areas. 1 Today, Salisbury remains a suburb with a strong industrial heritage, alongside established residential areas and community facilities shaped by its historical development.
