Toowong, an inner-western suburb of Brisbane, has a rich history shaped by early settlement, transport development, and urban growth. Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples, the suburb’s name is believed to come from an Aboriginal word, possibly describing the call of a bird. 1&2 European settlement began in the 1850s with land sales and the establishment of farms and villa estates along the Brisbane River and surrounding ridges. 1 By the 1860s, Toowong had become a recognisable village, with early institutions such as churches and schools contributing to its development. 2 A major turning point came with the opening of the Ipswich railway line in 1875, which significantly improved access to Brisbane and encouraged rapid residential growth. 2&1 The establishment of the Toowong Cemetery in 1871 and the creation of the Toowong Shire in 1880 further reflected the suburb’s importance as a growing community. 1 Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, transport improvements such as tram services and continued subdivision of land supported urban expansion, and by 1925 Toowong was incorporated into the City of Brisbane. 1&3 Today, Toowong is a well-established suburb that retains elements of its historical character while functioning as a key residential and commercial area close to the Brisbane CBD.
