Collection: The Brunswick Hotel: Fortitude Valley

The Brunswick Hotel in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, is a historic pub dating back to the late 19th century, reflecting the rapid commercial growth of the area during that period. The current building was constructed in 1889, replacing an earlier hotel on the site, and was designed by architect George William Campbell‑Wilson in the ornate Victorian Filigree style typical of Brisbane’s boom era. 1 Built for owner William Hill Robertson, the hotel became part of a network of prominent corner pubs that served travellers and locals along major routes such as Brunswick Street. 1 Over time, the building underwent alterations, including significant changes in the 1950s, but it has retained much of its original architectural character. 1 Today, the Brunswick Hotel remains an important heritage landmark, illustrating the social and commercial history of Fortitude Valley as it developed into one of Brisbane’s key entertainment and business districts.
