Milton, an inner‑city riverside suburb of Brisbane, has a history that reflects its evolution from early farmland to a diverse urban precinct. European settlement in the area began in the 1840s, when the land along the Brisbane River was used primarily for farming and grazing. The suburb takes its name from Milton House, a prominent residence built in the 1850s by Ambrose Eldridge, whose estate helped define the early character of the district. During the late 19th century, Milton developed rapidly with the arrival of key infrastructure, including the Ipswich railway line in 1875 and the establishment of industries such as the Castlemaine Perkins (XXXX) Brewery in 1878. Working‑class housing, schools, churches, and small businesses followed, creating a mixed residential and industrial suburb. Over time, Milton continued to evolve, with landmarks such as Lang Park (now Suncorp Stadium) and later commercial and dining precincts shaping its identity.
