Collection: The Oriental Hotel: Fortitude Valley
The Oriental Hotel in Fortitude Valley, now known as the Wickham Hotel, has a history dating back to Brisbane’s rapid development in the late nineteenth century. Built in 1885 for Timothy O’Shea and designed by prominent architect Richard Gailey, the hotel was originally established as the Oriental Hotel and formed part of a wave of substantial masonry hotels constructed during this period of urban growth. 1 Constructed by Cussack and O’Keefe, the building reflected the classical architectural style typical of the era and occupied a prominent corner site in the Valley. 1 In 1895, the property was purchased by Denis O’Connor, and it continued to operate as a hotel through the twentieth century, undergoing various modifications and ownership changes. 1 From the 1970s onward, the venue evolved into an important social space, becoming well known as a welcoming and inclusive gathering place, particularly for Brisbane’s LGBTQIA+ community, and later gaining broader recognition as a key nightlife destination. 2&3 Today, as the Wickham Hotel, it remains a significant cultural landmark in Fortitude Valley, combining its heritage origins as the Oriental Hotel with its ongoing role in Brisbane’s social and community life. 1
