Collection: Holland Park Collection
Holland Park, a suburb located about 9 kilometres south-east of Brisbane’s central business district, has a history that reflects its gradual transformation from rural land to a well-established residential area. The area was first settled in the 1860s, when it was used mainly for farming and grazing following the subdivision of land along what became Logan Road, an important transport route linking Brisbane to southern districts. 1&2 The suburb takes its name from early landowner Julius Holland, who purchased large areas of scrubland in 1865 and later subdivided and sold them as estates in the 1880s, encouraging settlement. 1
Development accelerated in the early 20th century, particularly after the extension of tram services to Holland Park in 1926, which made the area more accessible and attractive for residential growth. 3 As farmland was subdivided into housing estates during the 1920s and 1930s, the suburb evolved into a suburban community with schools, shops, and local facilities. 4 Further expansion occurred after World War II, with population growth and the construction of many timber homes, shaping the suburb’s character today. 1 Holland Park is now recognised as an established residential suburb that reflects both its agricultural origins and its later development as part of Brisbane’s suburban expansion.
