Rosalie Kindergarten in Brisbane, formally known as the Rosalie Community Kindergarten and Preschool, has its origins in the early growth of kindergarten education in Queensland during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The kindergarten was established in 1935 at 57 Elizabeth Street in Paddington, designed by Arnold Edward Brooks and built for the Crèche and Kindergarten Association, an organisation founded in 1907 to promote early childhood education and care. 1&2 Its development was part of a broader movement influenced by new ideas about children’s health, education, and welfare, which emphasised play, hygiene, and nurturing environments. 1 Prior to the construction of the current building, earlier kindergarten and crèche services operated in the Rosalie area from 1911, reflecting strong community demand for early learning facilities. 1 Over time, Rosalie Kindergarten has remained an important community institution, continuing to serve local families and earning recognition as a heritage-listed site in 2002 for its historical and social significance. 1
