Collection: Eight Mile Plains Collection.
Eight Mile Plains, located in Brisbane’s southern suburbs, has a history that reflects its origins as a rural transport stop and farming district. The area was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples before European settlement began in the mid‑19th century, when land was cleared for agriculture and small farms. The suburb takes its name from its distance—eight miles—from the early Brisbane settlement, and it became a recognised stopping point along the road to the Logan and Darling Downs regions, serving travellers, bullock teams, and early transport routes. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Eight Mile Plains remained largely rural, with farming activities dominating the landscape. It was not until the latter half of the 20th century, particularly from the 1970s onwards, that the area began to suburbanise, driven by improved road infrastructure and Brisbane’s expanding population. Today, Eight Mile Plains has evolved into a modern residential and commercial suburb, while still retaining connections to its historical role as a key waypoint in Brisbane’s early development.
