Collection: Transcontinental Hotel: Brisbane CBD

The Transcontinental Hotel in Brisbane’s CBD is a heritage-listed hotel dating from the late 19th century, reflecting the city’s rapid growth during that period. Constructed between 1883 and 1884 and designed by prominent architect Francis Drummond Greville Stanley, the hotel was built by businessman Peter Murphy to cater to travellers using the nearby Roma Street railway station. 1&2 Its location opposite this major transport hub made it an important accommodation and social venue, offering extensive facilities including numerous bedrooms and public rooms typical of first-class hotels of the era. 1 The Transcontinental Hotel became part of a cluster of prominent inner-city hotels along George Street during Brisbane’s economic boom of the 1880s, many of which served the growing population and commercial activity. 1 Despite later alterations and changing ownership, the building has retained its historic character and was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992, continuing today as a significant landmark illustrating Brisbane’s architectural and social history. 1
