Nathan, a suburb in southern Brisbane, has a history closely linked to public land use and education. Before it was officially named, much of the area formed part of Mount Gravatt and was reserved for community purposes, including the establishment of the Mount Gravatt Cemetery in 1918 and the preservation of bushland that later became Toohey Forest Park. 1 /2 The suburb of Nathan was formally named in 1967 after Sir Matthew Nathan, a former Governor of Queensland from 1920 to 1926. 2 A major turning point in its development came in the early 1970s when the Queensland Government selected the area as the site for a new university, leading to the opening of Griffith University’s Nathan campus in 1975. 1 This decision shaped the suburb’s identity as an educational and research hub, and today Nathan remains a sparsely populated area where natural bushland and institutional facilities dominate its landscape. 3
