Collection: Bulimba Collection

Bulimba, one of Brisbane’s oldest riverside suburbs, has a history that reflects its transition from rural land to a thriving residential community. Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples, the area’s name is believed to derive from a local word associated with the magpie lark. European settlement began in the mid‑19th century, when fertile riverfront land was used for farming and small industries, including sugar plantations and later manufacturing. As transport links improved—particularly with ferry services across the Brisbane River—Bulimba gradually developed into a desirable suburb, with Queenslander homes, churches, and community buildings emerging in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Over time, its village atmosphere centred around Oxford Street grew, blending historic character with modern amenities. Today, Bulimba retains much of its heritage charm, with preserved buildings and leafy streetscapes that reflect its evolution from a rural settlement to one of Brisbane’s most sought‑after inner‑city suburbs.
