Collection: Manly Collection
Manly, a bayside suburb of Brisbane, has a history shaped by its coastal location and development as a seaside destination. The area was originally inhabited by Aboriginal people of the Quandamooka region before European settlement began in the late 1850s, when land was surveyed and granted for farming and rural use. 1 In the 1860s, early land sales led to the establishment of estates such as Wyvernleigh, and by 1882 the “Manly Beach Estate” was subdivided and sold, with the suburb likely named after Manly in Sydney. 2 The opening of the Cleveland railway line in 1889 made the area more accessible, helping Manly become a seaside resort by the early 1900s, attracting visitors for holidays and recreation. 2&3 Throughout the 20th century, facilities such as schools, tidal baths, and boating clubs were established, and the construction of the Manly Boat Harbour from the late 1950s further strengthened its identity as a centre for boating and coastal living. 2&3 Today, Manly retains its historical character as a waterfront suburb that combines residential living with a strong maritime heritage.
