Collection: Treasury Hotel: Brisbane CBD
The Treasury Hotel in Brisbane is a significant heritage-listed building that dates back to the late nineteenth century. Constructed between 1887 and 1888, the hotel was designed by the architectural firm John Hall & Son and built by contractor Abraham James. It replaced an earlier establishment known as the Dunmore Arms (established in 1865) and was developed during a period of rapid growth in Brisbane’s central business district. Its location on George Street, directly opposite the newly constructed government Treasury Building, made it a prestigious site, attracting commercial travellers and visitors. The hotel was closely associated with early developer James Hunter and later publican Denis O’Connor, who commissioned its construction. Over time, the Treasury Hotel remained an important part of Brisbane’s hospitality landscape and stayed linked to the O’Connor family until the mid-twentieth century. Today, it is recognised for its historical and architectural value and has been listed on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1993, reflecting its enduring role in the city’s urban and cultural development. 1&2
