Collection: Story Bridge Hotel : Kangaroo Point
The Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane is one of the city’s most iconic heritage pubs, with a history dating back to the late 19th century. Built in 1885–1886 for publican James Darragh, the hotel originally operated as the Kangaroo Point Hotel, replacing an earlier establishment on the same site and serving the growing riverside community and nearby workers. Designed in an ornate Victorian Filigree style by prominent architect Richard Gailey, it reflected the prosperity and expansion of Brisbane during that era. The hotel gained its current name following the construction of the Story Bridge, which opened in 1940, cementing its identity as a landmark positioned beneath one of Brisbane’s most recognisable structures. Over the decades, the hotel has evolved through renovations and additions—including use during World War II and later restorations—while remaining a central social hub for locals and visitors. Today, it stands as a heritage‑listed venue that blends historic character with modern hospitality, reflecting both the history of Kangaroo Point and Brisbane’s broader development.
