Collection: Coopers Plains Collection
Coopers Plains, a southern suburb of Brisbane, has a long history dating back to the early days of European settlement in Queensland. Originally known as “Cowper’s Plains,” the area was named after Dr Henry Cowper, a surgeon at the Moreton Bay penal settlement, and was established as a convict outstation in the late 1820s. Early development centred on its role as a transport route, with roads linking Brisbane to Ipswich and Cleveland passing through the district. Following the opening of the area to free settlers in the 1840s, Coopers Plains became a rural community focused on farming, including dairy and small agricultural enterprises. The arrival of the railway in 1885 encouraged subdivision and gradual settlement, although the suburb remained largely rural until the mid‑20th century. After World War II, rapid population growth, housing development, and the establishment of infrastructure transformed Coopers Plains into a predominantly residential suburb, while still retaining elements of its early agricultural and transport heritage.
