Collection: South Brisbane Collection
South Brisbane is one of Brisbane’s oldest and most historically significant suburbs, with a history shaped by its riverside location and role in early settlement. Before European arrival, the area—known as Kurilpa—was an important meeting and cultural place for Indigenous peoples, particularly around sites such as Musgrave Park. 1 European development began in the 1840s, with the first land sales occurring in 1843 and the construction of wharves along the Brisbane River soon after, making the area a key centre for trade and transport. 2 By the mid-19th century, South Brisbane had become a busy commercial and residential district, supported by ferry connections and later bridges linking it to the city. 2 During the late 19th century, infrastructure such as railways, a dry dock (opened in 1881), and municipal buildings reflected its growing importance and prosperity. 2 However, after the major Brisbane flood of 1893, the central business focus shifted to the north side of the river, and South Brisbane gradually evolved into an industrial and port area. 3 In the late 20th century, the suburb underwent major transformation, particularly with the hosting of World Expo 88, which led to the redevelopment of the South Bank area into cultural and recreational parklands, shaping the modern identity of South Brisbane today. 4
