Collection: Wynnum Collection
Wynnum, a bayside suburb of Brisbane, has a history closely connected to its coastal location along Moreton Bay. Originally inhabited by Indigenous Australians, the area was valued for its rich marine resources and access to waterways. European settlement began in the mid-19th century, when the land was used for farming, fishing, and small-scale industry. The name “Wynnum” is believed to come from an Aboriginal word meaning “place of pandanus trees.” The suburb’s development accelerated with the arrival of the railway line in 1889, which connected Wynnum to Brisbane and encouraged it to grow as a seaside resort destination. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Wynnum became popular for holidaymakers, with the construction of bathing enclosures, jetties, and recreational facilities along the waterfront. Over time, the area transitioned from a resort town into a residential suburb, while still maintaining its strong connection to the bay. Today, Wynnum is known for its coastal lifestyle and heritage features that reflect its origins as both a fishing community and a seaside retreat.
