Collection: Fortitude Valley Collection

Fortitude Valley, one of Brisbane’s oldest and most vibrant inner‑city suburbs, has a history that reflects both early European settlement and the city’s evolving commercial and cultural life. Originally inhabited by the Turrbal and Jagera peoples, the area became known as Fortitude Valley after Scottish immigrants arrived in 1849 aboard the ship Fortitude and established a temporary settlement at nearby York’s Hollow when promised land grants were not provided. By the late 1850s, the area had developed into a small community with houses, churches, schools, and local businesses, gradually gaining independence from Brisbane’s central settlement. During the late 19th century, Fortitude Valley grew into a major commercial and retail centre, with department stores, shops, and improved transport links such as railways and trams supporting its expansion. In the 20th century, the suburb experienced periods of decline and association with vice industries, before undergoing significant revitalisation from the 1980s onwards. Today, Fortitude Valley is renowned for its mix of heritage buildings, cultural diversity, and lively entertainment scene, remaining a key hub of Brisbane’s social and economic activity.
