Collection: Cloudland

Cloudland, originally opened as Luna Park in 1940 on Montpelier Hill in Bowen Hills, became one of Brisbane’s most celebrated entertainment landmarks. Designed as a grand ballroom with a striking illuminated arch and a vast sprung dance floor, it hosted dances, debutante balls, concerts, civic events and even university examinations, becoming closely woven into the city’s social life through the mid-twentieth century. During and after World War II, its identity shifted from amusement-park attraction to the famous Cloudland Ballroom, remembered for its elegant interiors and hilltop presence above Brisbane. Despite strong public attachment and heritage concern, the building was controversially demolished in 1982, ending more than four decades of cultural history and leaving Cloudland as one of Brisbane’s most fondly remembered lost landmarks.
