Collection: Moorooka Collection

Moorooka, a southern suburb of Brisbane, has a history that reflects its transformation from rural land to a developed residential area. Originally inhabited by Indigenous Australians, the area was once known as “Rocky Water Holes,” referring to the wetlands and creeks that provided important natural resources. 1&2 European settlement began in the 1860s, when the land was used for farming activities such as cotton and sugar cane cultivation, and timber cutting was also an early industry. 1&3 The suburb’s name, “Moorooka,” is derived from an Aboriginal word, possibly meaning “ironbark” or “nose,” and it was officially adopted in 1887 with the opening of the local railway station, which helped connect the area to Brisbane. 1&4The arrival of the railway and later transport developments encouraged residential growth, although Moorooka remained largely rural until the early 20th century. 3 Between the 1920s and post–World War II period, the suburb expanded significantly, with the establishment of schools, shops, and housing estates, including areas for returned servicemen. 1 Industrial activity during World War II and improved transport links further accelerated development, and by the mid-20th century Moorooka had evolved into a well-established suburban community with a mix of residential, commercial, and light industrial areas. 5
