Stones Corner, an inner-southern suburb of Brisbane, has a history that reflects its origins as a transport crossroads and small commercial hub. Originally known as “Burnett Swamp” due to its low-lying, flood-prone land near Norman Creek, the area began to develop after land sales in the mid-19th century. 1&2 In 1875, an early settler named James Stone purchased land at the junction of Logan Road and Old Cleveland Road, where he established a small refreshment stop for travellers; this led to the area becoming known as “Stone’s Corner.” 3&2 Development accelerated in the late 19th century with the subdivision of land and the construction of the Junction Hotel (later the Stones Corner Hotel) in 1888, which became a focal point for the growing community. 1&2 The introduction of tram services in the early 1900s further improved access and helped transform Stones Corner into a busy suburban centre with shops, services, and passing trade. 1 Throughout the 20th century, the area developed into a well-known retail and commercial precinct, although it remained affected by flooding due to its geography. 1 Today, Stones Corner is recognised for its mix of heritage buildings and modern development, reflecting its evolution from a rural crossroads into a vibrant inner-city suburb.
