Salisbury, named after the residence of early Brisbane engineer William Coote, is presumed to refer to Salisbury, England. The Beenleigh railway line opened in 1885, including the Salisbury railway station. Development began in neighboring Rocklea before Salisbury, and several estates were auctioned in the early 1900s, including the Salisbury Township Estate in 1912 and the Mountain View Estate in 1918. Salisbury State School opened in 1920, followed by residential auctions in the 1920s.

During World War II, Salisbury remained rural but saw the establishment of munition factories, including the Rocklea Munitions Works, which later repurposed for engine overhauls for the US Army Air Force. Public transport improved with the tram line extension in 1941, which operated until 1969.

Salisbury State High School opened in 1954 and later merged to form Nyanda State High School, which closed in 2013. Significant residential development accelerated post-war, with new schools like St Pius X Catholic School opening in 1964. Nyanda Station closed in 1978 due to electrification. Southside Christian College was established in 1985 and later renamed Brisbane Christian College. St Mary Magdalene Anglican Church was dedicated in 1997 but closed in 2014 due to declining attendance.
