Moorooka Suburb Poster Print

Moorooka, a southern suburb of Brisbane, has a history that reflects its transition from rural land to a developed residential area. Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples, the area was later used for farming in the 1860s before becoming a stop-over point for travellers heading south and west from Brisbane 1&2. The suburb’s name, derived from an Indigenous word possibly meaning “ironbark” or “nose,” came into official use with the opening of the Moorooka railway station in 1887, which helped stimulate early settlement and growth 1. Throughout the twentieth century, particularly after World War II, Moorooka developed into a suburban community with increasing residential, commercial, and industrial activity, shaping the diverse suburb seen today 1.
