J. E. Barney was the first full-time postmaster of Brisbane, appointed in 1852. In 1862, Thomas Lodge Murray Prior became Queensland's first Postmaster-General. Postal services initially operated from a small, inconvenient convict-era building. A new post office was built on a centrally located half-hectare site, and the old building was demolished in 1871.
Constructed with local freestone and bricks, the General Post Office (GPO) opened on 28 September 1872. It housed the Queensland Museum from 1873 until 1879, when a second wing was completed, allowing the telegraph office to relocate there. The GPO features deep verandahs, high ceilings, and a clock that was originally gas-powered. Notably, in 1892, it introduced the first typewriter in an Australian post office. The building has been listed on the Brisbane City Council Heritage Register.
