Toowong: feat: Regatta Hotel. 1874 Brisbane Icon
Toowong, an inner-western suburb of Brisbane, has a history shaped by early Indigenous occupation, colonial settlement, and transport-driven growth. Originally inhabited by the Turrbal people, the area began developing in the mid-nineteenth century when land was subdivided and sold, with the name “Toowong”—derived from an Aboriginal word likely referring to a bird—coming into use in the 1860s 1&2. The opening of the Ipswich railway line and Toowong station in 1875 accelerated settlement, transforming the area into a desirable residential suburb with large homes and growing commercial activity 1&3. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Toowong had developed into an important suburban centre, with institutions such as the Toowong Cemetery and local businesses contributing to its continued growth and significance within Brisbane 2.
